In the mid-19th century, an event in the Owl Mountains region shook Europe, and its media coverage became a symbolic spark for the later Spring of Nations. The story of the rebellion of Silesian weavers who demanded better living conditions inspired Nobel Prize winner Gerhart Hauptmann. Read from today’s perspective, his drama is not only a story based on facts, but above all a picture of the struggle for recognition and dignity.
We waited 70 years for this title at the Silesian Theatre! In the autumn of 1954, rehearsals for the play “The Weavers”, translated by Wilhelm Szewczyk, began on our stage. However, the Polish premiere, planned for the first months of 1955, did not take place – its production was suspended. Today, the Nobel Prize winner’s work is recalled by Maja Kleczewska, one of the most important Polish directors, well known to our audience for such titles as “Under Pressure” and “The Kindly Ones”. For the purposes of this production, she uses a new Silesian translation of Hauptmann’s text by Mirosław Syniawa.
