On 4 December 1980, during a robbery, Stella Walsh (born Stanisława Walasiewicz) was fatally shot by one of the assailants. An autopsy revealed that Stella was intersex. The findings sparked a transphobic investigation in which her medals and world records were called into question. She was accused of deliberate fraud – of having taken the place of “real women”.
The creators of the performance construct a biographical fiction about Stella Walsh, beginning with what remains unknown about her – what continues to fuel speculation and conjecture.
At the heart of the story lies the experience of discrimination faced by intersex individuals – discrimination that can begin at home, within one’s closest circle.
