The city promises advancement, electricity, a better life. It's tempting.
Enter Emilka, our guide to this world, a young country girl who is about to become “one of the many Kasias or Marysias” – nameless women whose lot she shares. In her new surroundings she meets other domestics and gradually discovers what ultimately happened to these women who helped make other people's lives but never had a chance to live their own.
Based on Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak's reportage Służące do wszystkiego (Domestics), the drama puts the voices of these forgotten women back at the centre. The secretive and at times absurd world of interwar domestic service reveals structures of violence that – though changed – survive to this day. A story of class, invisible work, and the need for community as the first step to resistance.
