We’re All Going to End Up Like Suckers, or an Anthem of Early Capitalism is an adaptation of short stories from Serhiy Zhadan’s book Anthem of Democratic Youth, read through the lens of failure – in the spirit of Jack Halberstam.
The plot unfolds in the memory of the main character, transporting us to the early 2000s in Kyiv – a time when economic transformation seemed to promise something better; capitalism appeared as a golden train speeding towards a bright future, and the only thing to do was jump on before it left without us.
This is a postcard from the past – from a generation that believed success and failure were matters of personal cunning and effort; a generation that placed its emotions in objects because it couldn’t express them in words; a generation driven to despair by business and love.
