This production, based on Ali Smith’s novel Autumn, is a stage adaptation directed by Katarzyna Minkowska – one of the most promising artists of the youngest generation.
Focusing on the unusual friendship between Daniel – a centenarian plagued by insomnia – and Elizabeth, a woman in her thirties, Autumn paints a vivid picture of a society in flux. Ali Smith’s narrative unfolds as a collage of fragmented realities: memories, images, forgotten emotions, and – strikingly present – social chaos and widening divisions that shape our individual lives.
Dreams blend with reality, memories with fantasy, all gently framed by the quiet shift in seasons. As a hot, oppressive summer gives way to autumn, the story – built from scraps, cuttings and impressions – emerges as both a poetic journey through oneiric imagery and a sharp reflection on how political and social forces shape who we are.
